Anywhere that you might be using one of these, a person always needs to be careful, but more care should be used when using one in a laboratory setting. It's important that students that are using one for mild or moderate heating of hot water baths are taught how to safely use them.


One of the first things anyone should learn when using one of these for a lab water bath is to make sure that the container that is being used is heat tolerant and made from heat treated glassware. Also make sure the item is free from any cracks. Another important thing to remember is that the area that the items sit to be heated on should be bigger than the object itself.


Something else that is very important for anyone who happens to be using one is that it should never be used with any type of chemical that might be hazardous in a way in which there might be an explosion or fire.


It is always a good thing to add stones that are specially made for boiling and add them to what you are trying to boil. This will help facilitate the heating process of whatever is being heated on the hot plate


Never lose track or concentration on what you are doing when boiling items, it becomes dangerous when a liquid is allowed to boil down. This can cause cracks in the glassware even the hazard of them shattering.


It is a good idea to only turn it on to either the medium or the medium high setting for any liquid that might need to be heated. This includes the heating of water. Low boiling liquids should never be heated over the high setting at any time. The surface can actually reach as high as 540 C (1004 F), and that is hot.

When removing objects from a hot plate it is wise to use tongs or rubber coated, heat resistant gripping devices. This will ensure that the student or whomever will not burn themselves in the process. This same caution should be used when pouring hot liquids.


When a person is done using the hot plate, it is important to let others know around them that they are done and to be careful of it. It should be shut off as soon as it is no longer needed because it takes a long time for it to cool off. And it is hard to tell if it is hot or not since when it is hot it looks no different than when it is cold.
